Pregnancy lasts approximately 40 weeks from the first day of your last menstrual period. Here is a trimester-by-trimester overview of fetal development and maternal changes.

First Trimester (Weeks 1-13)

The most critical period of development. The neural tube forms (becoming the brain and spinal cord), the heart begins beating around week 6, and all major organs start developing. Morning sickness, fatigue, and breast tenderness are common.

Second Trimester (Weeks 14-27)

Often called the "golden period." Energy returns, the baby's movements become noticeable (quickening), and the baby develops facial features, fingerprints, and responds to sound.

Third Trimester (Weeks 28-40)

The baby gains weight rapidly, lungs mature, and the baby moves into the head-down position for birth. Braxton Hicks contractions may occur as the body prepares for labor.
